Tree of the month · October
Parrotia persica
Persian ironwood
Our pick for October. As the nights draw in, Persian ironwood puts on one of the finest autumn displays of any tree, its leaves turning from green to gold, orange, crimson and purple, often all at once. With flaking patchwork bark and tiny red winter flowers, it keeps giving long after the leaves fall, and it copes well with heat and drought.
