Why we love it
Crape myrtle flowers when much of the garden is fading, with frothy blooms in late summer and early autumn.
Its smooth, patchwork bark is beautiful in winter, and the leaves often colour brilliantly before they fall.
How to use it
Plant it in the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have: a south-facing courtyard, terrace or against a warm wall. It also does well in a large container.
Planting and aftercare
Plant in spring into free-draining soil in full sun and water through the first two summers. Prune in late winter to tidy the stems and show off the bark.
