Why we love it
Few trees offer foliage colour like Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy'. Its heart-shaped leaves emerge rich burgundy, glowing when the sun shines through them, and finish the year in shades of orange and gold.
In spring, tiny pea-like pink flowers appear directly on the bare branches before the leaves, a lovely early show.
How to use it
Plant it where low sun can backlight the leaves, as a feature in a border or courtyard. Its colour combines beautifully with silver foliage, soft pinks and lime-green planting.
Planting and aftercare
Choose a sheltered, well-drained spot and avoid waterlogged ground. Plant in autumn or spring and water well while it establishes. It resents root disturbance, so plant it in its final position, and prune only lightly after flowering if needed.
