Why we love it
Stewartia offers something in every season, but it is perhaps best loved for its bark, which flakes into a patchwork of grey, cream and cinnamon.
In midsummer it bears white, camellia-like flowers, and in autumn the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and orange.
How to use it
A collector’s tree for a sheltered spot, woodland garden or courtyard where its bark can be enjoyed up close.
Planting and aftercare
Plant between autumn and spring in moist, acid to neutral soil, mulch well and water through dry spells.
