Why we love it
Few trees bring as much grace to a garden as the Japanese maple. Its fine leaves move in the slightest breeze and cast soft, dappled shade.
In autumn it lights up in shades of red, orange and gold, and its layered branches are beautiful in winter too.
How to use it
Plant it as a focal point in a courtyard, beside water or in a woodland-style border, sheltered from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun.
Planting and aftercare
Plant between autumn and spring, mulch well and water through dry spells, especially in the first two summers. Little pruning is needed; remove crossing stems in winter.
