Why we love it

Hazel is one of the first trees to bring the garden to life each year, with lemon-yellow catkins dancing on bare stems in late winter.

It grows naturally as a multi-stem, so it has an easy, woodland grace, and it is a valuable plant for birds, insects and small mammals.

How to use it

Perfect for naturalistic and woodland-style gardens, wildlife gardens and the back of large borders. Underplant with spring bulbs, ferns and woodland perennials.

Planting and aftercare

Plant between autumn and spring and water through the first summer. Hazel responds beautifully to pruning: remove a few of the oldest stems at the base in late winter to keep it fresh and open.
