Multi-stem Trees
Heptacodium miconioides
Seven son flower
A multi-stem tree with two seasons of flower and bark that peels in soft, papery strips. Heptacodium miconioides brings scent, pollinators and structure to the garden just as most plants are winding down.
Fragrant white flowers from late summer into autumn
Showy rose-red calyces follow the flowers, extending the display
Pale, peeling bark that looks wonderful in winter
A magnet for bees and butterflies late in the season
Please check before you visit. Our nursery is very well stocked, but what we hold changes with the seasons, so this plant may not always be in stock. Enquire before you head over and we will check availability and the sizes we have for you.

Why we love it
Few trees flower as late as Heptacodium miconioides. Clusters of jasmine-scented white flowers open from late summer, then the calyces flush rose-red so the tree seems to bloom twice.
Grown as a multi-stem, its pale, peeling bark becomes a feature in its own right, particularly when lit low in winter.
How to use it
Plant it near a terrace or path where you can enjoy the late-season scent, or use it as a feature tree in a mixed border. Its airy canopy suits smaller gardens and courtyards, and it pairs beautifully with late-flowering perennials and ornamental grasses.
Planting and aftercare
Plant in autumn or spring into well-prepared soil, and water regularly through its first two summers while it establishes. Little pruning is needed: simply remove any crossing or damaged stems in late winter to keep the multi-stem framework clean and open.
