Why we love Thuja 'Smaragd'
For a tidy evergreen hedge that asks very little of you, 'Smaragd' is hard to beat. Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' means emerald, and it lives up to its name: glossy, bright green sprays that hold their colour right through winter, when many conifers dull or bronze.
It grows naturally into a slim, dense cone, usually staying under about 1m wide, so a row forms a crisp, formal green wall with hardly any clipping. That makes it perfect where space is tight, along a drive, beside a path or in a small town garden. It grows a steady 15 to 30cm a year, which is why it's so easy to look after.
Choosing a size
Pick the height that suits the job. Plants of 80 to 100cm make a lovely low, formal boundary. At 120 to 150cm you have a hedge to grow on to head height. Because 'Smaragd' takes its time, buying bigger is the quickest way to privacy: larger root-balled plants of 1.75 to 2.5m give you a finished six-foot hedge from day one.
How many per metre depends on how wide the plants are when they arrive: divide 100 by the width in centimetres. A 50cm wide plant goes in at 2 per metre, and younger, slimmer plants usually go in at 2.5 to 3 per metre so they close up sooner. The calculator above works it out for you, and the team will check the spacing on every order.
Planting
Plant in autumn or early spring, when the soil is moist and roots settle quickly. Root-balled plants are available from roughly October or November to March, and pot-grown plants can go in all year with regular watering. Allow about 50cm from a fence or wall so you can reach the back. Dig a trench, keep the top of the root ball level with the soil, loosen the hessian at the top but leave the wire on, then water well and mulch with peat-free compost. It grows on clay, loam and chalk, as long as the ground doesn't stay waterlogged. It loves full sun or light shade but thins out in deeper shade, so for a shady boundary choose yew instead.
Looking after it
Give a deep soak once or twice a week in dry weather for the first two summers. One light trim a year in late spring or late summer is usually enough, with a second if you like a really sharp finish. Always clip within the green foliage, as thuja doesn't reliably regrow from bare brown wood. Wear gloves, and clear up the clippings, as thuja is harmful if eaten.
Is 'Smaragd' the same as 'Emerald Green'?
Yes. 'Smaragd' is Danish for emerald, and the same plant is often sold as 'Emerald' or 'Emerald Green'. If you want a faster, broader screen, look at Thuja 'Brabant'.

Frequently asked questions
-
Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' grows at a steady 15 to 30cm a year once established. It is slower than Thuja 'Brabant' or leylandii, which is why it makes such a low-maintenance hedge that needs only one or two light trims a year.
-
Spacing depends on how wide the plants are supplied: divide 100 by the width in centimetres, so plants 60cm wide go in at about 1.7 per metre, roughly 60cm apart. Younger, slimmer plants are usually planted at around 2.5 to 3 per metre. The Form Plants team confirms spacing for each order.
-
As a hedge, Thuja 'Smaragd' is easily kept anywhere from about 1m to 3m. Left unclipped, a single plant slowly forms a narrow column of around 4 to 5m over many years.
-
Thuja 'Smaragd' is naturally narrow, typically staying under about 1m wide even when mature, and it can be clipped tighter. This makes it ideal for drives, paths and small gardens where space is limited.
-
Yes. 'Smaragd' is Danish for emerald, and the same plant is often sold as Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald' or 'Emerald Green', particularly in North America. It is prized for keeping its bright green colour through winter.
-
Yes, Thuja 'Smaragd' is known for holding its bright emerald colour through winter better than most hedging conifers, including Thuja 'Brabant', which can take on a slight bronze tint in cold, exposed spots.
-
Thuja 'Smaragd' grows best in full sun or light shade. In deeper shade it becomes thinner and more open, so for a shady boundary, yew is usually the better evergreen hedge.
-
Browning in Thuja 'Smaragd' is most often caused by dry roots while the plants are establishing, drying winds, waterlogged soil or clipping into old brown wood. Deep watering in the first two summers, a good mulch and trimming only into green growth keep it healthy and green.
-
Thuja is harmful if eaten because its foliage contains thujone, and it can upset dogs, cats and horses that chew it. The foliage can also irritate sensitive skin, so wear gloves when trimming and clear up clippings.
-
The cost depends on the height and tier you choose. Value plants are younger, well-shaped plants for longer runs on a budget, while Premium plants are fuller, taller root-balled plants for an instant, finished hedge. Live prices and sizes are shown on this page, and the team confirms quantities and pricing for each order.
