A runway of greenery in The Tanks, London, May 2024

The project

For Sabato De Sarno’s Cruise 2025 collection, Gucci filled The Tanks at Tate Modern, built as oil tanks for the old Bankside power station, with around 20,000 plants. Ferns, grasses, young trees and trailing plants created a dense, immersive panorama of greenery inspired by the house’s botanical Flora motifs, softening one of London’s most industrial spaces into something wild and alive.

After the show, the plants went on to green community projects across London.

What Form did

Form supplied every plant for the show, working very closely with garden designers Cargill Sykes (Duncan Cargill and Tom Sykes) and with the production teams at Bureau Betak and Inca Productions, from sourcing and growing on to delivery into The Tanks.

At roughly the scale of six Main Avenue show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, it is the largest installation Form has ever delivered. A planting crew of 36 installed the whole scheme in just four days, ready for a fixed show date with no room for delay.

The planting

A layered, naturalistic mix of ferns, grasses, young and small trees and trailing plants, set into the concrete of The Tanks to feel as though nature had reclaimed the space. Planting at this scale indoors depends on robust, well-grown plants that look their best from the moment they arrive, and on a team who can place thousands of them quickly and precisely.
