Singer Will Young’s first garden design, created with Form founder Jamie Butterworth for the RHS Wisley Flower Show at RHS Garden Wisley in September 2026.
Out of the Shadows explores Carl Jung’s idea of the “shadow self” through three open, planted cubes, moving from deep shade into full light. Will and Jamie worked on the design together, bringing Will’s interest in Jungian theory together with Jamie’s plant knowledge.
Form Plants supplied the planting, from the layered ferns and shade-loving foliage of the first cube to the meadow-like drifts of grasses and sun-loving perennials in the last.

The project
Out of the Shadows is a planting installation by singer and keen gardener Will Young, created with Form founder and RHS Gold medal-winning designer Jamie Butterworth for the RHS Wisley Flower Show, 1 to 6 September 2026. It brings together Will’s interest in Jungian theory with Jamie’s plant knowledge.
The garden explores Carl Jung’s idea of the “shadow self”, the parts of ourselves we keep hidden, through three open, planted cubes that trace a journey from introspection and isolation towards openness and possibility.
The planting
“Beneath the Canopy” begins in deep shade, with dense, layered, shade-loving planting of ferns and foliage. “Where the Light Falls” opens into filtered sunlight, with lighter, airier planting where hidden parts of the self begin to surface. “Into the Open” ends in full light, among naturalistic, meadow-like drifts of grasses and colourful, sun-loving perennials.
