One of the very best evergreens for making simple topiary shapes such as balls and domes, osmanthus is an alternative to box (Buxus) with its easy-going, pest- and disease-free nature. In some ways we think Osmanthus x burkwoodii is more exciting; its handsome oval dark-green leaves form tight, dense growth if trimmed regularly but, when a more relaxed trimming style is adopted, the plant in spring is decorated by delightful little ivory-white, trumpet flowers. They have a deliciously sweet scent that is strongest in the evening and carries on the air. Your garden guests will spend ages guessing which plant the perfume comes from! This plant holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
