One of the loveliest deciduous plants that can be shaped, hornbeam is a delight in the garden all year. Its lush green, pleated, oval leaves are at their brightest in spring, while in autumn foliage turns yellow then coppery-brown before falling – a few leaves remaining to flicker amid the branches through winter. A UK native, Carpinus betulus is easy and undemanding, and does well in a wide range of gardens – it will even be a success in cold, poorly drained soil or lightly shaded places. We find it also trims remarkably well, making a well-defined topiary shape. Hornbeam holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
