Thuja plicata is a handsome and fast-growing evergreen conifer that makes an excellent dense hedge or screen, responding well to regular cutting. It makes a quick-to-grow, reliable and easy choice with flat sprays of tiny, scale-like, bright, glossy green leaves that are slightly silvery beneath and have a pineapple-like scent when cut. Left to grow unpruned, Thuja plicata ”Excelsa” forms a large conical tree with spreading lower branches and a trunk of red-brown bark. Thuja plicata is an easier plant to manage than Leyland cypress as it shoots more willingly from older growth.
