We can’t think of a more sophisticated evergreen hedge than one of Osmanthus x burkwoodii, yet it remains an unusual choice. The dense growth and dark-green oval leaves make it perfect for a boundary and an ideal backdrop for planting, and its ease of cultivation means it needs little care except for trimming once established. It will also thrive in sun or some shade. The wonderful bonus is the displays of deliciously-scented white flowers in spring: the jasmine-like perfume and the blooms are quite showy, standing out well from the leaves while filling the air with a gorgeous scent. We recommend you hold off trimming the hedge until after flowering, which also helps promote next year’s flower buds. Osmanthus makes an excellent choice in a sensory garden or for attracting pollinating insects. This plant holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
