Feathered trees are those with a single, vertical trunk: a young, nursery-grown tree that has been allowed to develop as it would naturally with lateral (side) branches down the main stem, rather in the shape of a feather. This is the normal form of a sapling tree and may later be lightly but carefully trained by gardeners after it is planted – this ensures it gradually develops as it matures to form a well-shaped, healthy and beautiful garden tree.
