Some think this plant looks like a compact holly: it isn’t, but it is an excellent evergreen hedging plant that deserves to be much better known. Its younger leaves are the most spiny and as the plant ages, the leathery foliage changes its form, with the foliage becoming serrated or almost entirely oval. Holly olive forms a dense hedge and can be kept quite low; it is easily grown in well-drained soil in a sunny place with some shelter from extreme cold. Hedges of Osmanthus heterophyllus will flower in autumn if not trimmed too tightly, the white blooms small and hidden by foliage. We love the sweet smell that carries on the air and attracts pollinating insects.
