This useful Dutch selection of Parrotia persica forms a fairly small and more upright-growing tree than usual Parrotia persica. It is a deciduous tree grown chiefly for its dramatic autumn foliage colours which last long into early winter, although it is attractive year-round. In spring, the broad, oval foliage emerges bronze-tinted from quite glossy red new shoots before turning rich green. Mature plants develop flaking silver-grey bark. In autumn, the leaves of this Persian ironwood turn to shades of purple, orange and red in a superb display before falling. In late winter, plants also bear small, brush-like, petal-less dark-red flowers. Parrotia persica ‘Vanessa ‘ holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
