Leyland cypress is the quickest-growing conifer that can be cultivated in the UK and has long been popular for screening and hedging. It still makes a great choice for larger gardens, forming thick, dense, evergreen cover in a remarkably short space of time. But it comes with the proviso that it is regularly maintained. It may prove too vigorous for small sites, but it can be an ideal choice for quickly providing privacy and shelter. Left unpruned, x Cupressocyparis leylandii forms a dense, upright tree capable of reaching 15m in just 16 years, and will eventually reach 35m or more. The rich green foliage is held in rather drooping sprays of scale-like leaves that have a strong lemony scent when cut. As a hedge it can be kept to a minimum of around 2.5-3m tall but will need trimming a couple of times a year; never cut back into old wood as plants do not regenerate well.
