TOPIARY CONES AND PYRAMIDS
For bringing a touch of order and elegant formality to plantings, topiary pyramids and cones are hard to beat, their clean sides and defined corners adding geometric appeal. Choose from evergreen or deciduous options. Evergreen pyramids and cones will bring year-round solidity and structure with the bonus of soft, bright-green spring shoots that contrast with older, darker foliage before needing to be trimmed. Deciduous topiary is more subtle in winter, opaque with an interesting tracery of branches.
Use topiary pyramids in pairs to frame a doorway, sculpture or path; repeat in borders or topiary hedges as exclamation marks; or use them for bringing height and structure to planting. Or perhaps just use them in contrast to rounded topiary shapes. Pyramids make a good choice if a single topiary shape is needed. They work well in the centre of a circular bed as an anchoring focal point (but remember to allow access for trimming). They will also do well in large containers, if kept well watered.
