Oval leaf privet is still among the most popular of hedging plants and associated with many a suburban front garden. Its popularity is well earned as this is a tough plant that’s easy to grow and care for, making a dense hedge that needs little care other than regular trimming once established. Ligustrum ovalifolium is usually evergreen, bearing emerald-green, glossy oval leaves, except in cold winters when it may lose some leaves; it is generally tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Plants are vigorous and may need trimming 2 to 3 times a year. Left to grow unpruned, oval leaf privet makes a large, wide-spreading, unremarkable shrub, but as a hedge it can look superb, especially in spring as the bright new growth emerges. In summer, plants may bear sprays of of small insect-attracting scented flowers, followed in autumn by black berries, if not regularly clipped.
