Position: Best in full sun; will tolerate some shade and stands exposed sites and thin chalky soil well

Northern White Cedar is a handsome and fast-growing evergreen conifer that makes an excellent dense hedge or screen, responding well to regular cutting. It makes a quick-to-grow, reliable and easy choice with flat sprays of tiny, scale-like, bright, glossy green leaves that are slightly silvery beneath and have a pineapple-like scent when cut. Left to grow unpruned, Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’ forms a large conical tree with spreading lower branches and a trunk of red-brown bark. Northern White Cedar is an easier plant to manage than Leyland cypress as it shoots more willingly from older growth. This plant holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
