New Zealand Privet is a splendid evergreen plant most often seen in the UK in coastal areas, clipped into a dense, tidy hedge. But it is easy to grow anywhere that is not in a frost pocket. It can also be allowed to grow naturally into a potentially large shrub or small tree. Griselinia littoralis is a fairly upright-growing plant when young, with lovely smooth, rather tactile waxy, bright-green oval foliage. Once established, it grows quite quickly, standing spells of drought well and needing little maintenance, naturally forming a wide-spreading shrub, but as a hedge it can be easily kept compact. Plants are male or female; females may bear blackish oval fruits. New Zealand Privet holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
