This is a small plant with a big future. If you are looking for an alternative to box hedging, this great little plant is one of the best options and we’re certain we will be seeing Japanese holly used in many situations where box was once planted. Although not yet well known, Ilex crenata ‘Dark Green’ has many of the same wonderful attributes: easy to grow, versatile in a range of sites, and ideal for forming low boundaries where you need a parterre or low hedge. Once established, its growth is consistently dense and tight, and the little, dark-green, oval (thorn-free) leaves, 1.5cm long, look from a distance a lot like those of box. You may even see the odd glossy black berry. Japanese holly holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
