Position: Full sun to part shade, best kept sheltered when young

Here is a super but little-known, easily-grown plant for forming low and medium-sized hedges, and one we think really worth considering if you are looking to replace box hedging – or want to plant something easier to maintain. It is similar to Japanese holly (Ilex crenata ‘Green Hedger’), but it’s rather quicker-growing and with longer but more slender, evergreen, wonderfully glossy foliage. Ilex maximowicziana ‘Kanehirae’ is an ideal choice if you want to create a taller hedge at, say, 1m high or more. That said, it responds well to trimming and is really tough, hardier than box, thriving in sun or part shade while growing pretty quickly once established.
