Common privet is a UK-native shrub with semi-evergreen foliage; this selection holds onto its leaves for longer, providing near year-round cover when grown as a hedge, especially in a mild winter. Its tough leaves are more slender than the better-known oval leaf privet. Ligustrum vulgare ‘Atrovirens’ makes a good choice for an undemanding and quick-to-grow hedge, suitable for a range of conditions. In summer, plants may bear white flowers which are followed by shining black fruits in autumn. A useful plant used in a hedge on its own, or with mixed native plants. Common privet also has high wildlife value.
